Some are the best designs are those you sketch out on paper first and recreate with ships parts in designer. Base your designs on how you think your custom Civs ships should look like based on the races traits, personality and alignment, benevelent, pragmatic or manevelent. You do not have to use games base core ships as your base start, You can in fact create ships from scratch, only limits are your own imgaination. Use the scaling tools to resize, angle and offest parts to desired positions you want. All parts have red cone " hardpoints" to place parts on. When your are ready select a hull scale starter block and a ship part to use as your base starting part then build upon that until get your desired design. Next click on design tab and click on either Size, Type or Styles, look over each to familarize yourself with the different ship parts for all races and by size and type. Since you have not made any custom ships yet none will appear theren, Click on New Design, at bottom of screen click on options check box to show all races ship parts and design gizmo's. When you open the ship designer click on USER tab.
